We are excited to announce that the following Professional Learning Unit (PLU) courses will be offered at various locations for your convenience. To register please print the corresponding application form and mail it as soon as possible; remember that space is limited, please register early.If you are not currently teaching, a signature on your registration form is not required. Courses are listed in date order (earliest first).
All courses have been approved by the Georgia Department of Education for Professional Learning Unit (PLU) credit. PLU courses are state accepted to fulfill DHR requirements.

Understanding Dyslexia

This course is designed to educate participants on the subject of Dyslexia. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that adversely affects the ability to read and write and is neurobiological in its origin. Teachers, administrators, psychologists and administrators must be educated on this subject so that early intervention can occur and the correct instructional methods and accommodations can be given the student. Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory Training |
This course will provide an overview of: the development of written language, recent relevant research information, and techniques to incorporate knowledge of phonology, morphology, semantics, syllabication, and syntax into multi-sensory teaching of reading, writing, and spelling. It is designed for teachers, tutors and home school parents, who are working with students who have difficulty acquiring basic written language skills through traditional basal or whole language methods. The method and materials presented will be appropriate for a wide age and grade level range of students. This course is taught in compliance with The Orton-Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and Educators. This course has been approved by the Georgia Department of Education for Seven (7) Professional Learning Units.

There are five areas of reading. This course will focus on phonics and phonological awareness. Emphasis will be on phonics rules, when and how to teach them and the importance of systematic and explicit instruction.
